The Leather City

Old Buford, Still Standing Proud

Buford grew up around the railway in the 1860s and 1870s and took its name from the line’s president, Algernon Sidney Buford. What really put it on the map was leather. The Bona Allen company tanned hides and made saddles and harnesses here for about a century, and the city still answers to the nickname “The Leather City.”

You can see that history downtown. Tannery Row, built in 1919 as a Bona Allen shoe factory, has been an artist colony since 2003, and a statue of Roy Rogers with Trigger and a saddle-maker nods to the Hollywood cowboys who rode Bona Allen saddles. Most of the city sits in Gwinnett County, but a strip of the north side crosses into Hall.

Older homes with deep porches and newer builds with tall stone gables both take permanent lights well. The Architectural Lights page shows how a crisp white outline picks out that kind of detail, and permanent Christmas lights covers the December side.

Where North Gwinnett Goes to See Lights

For nearly thirty years, the Magical Nights of Lights drive at Lake Lanier Islands was a Buford winter ritual. It came back in 2025 after five years away, and the drive-through is part of the season again. The Mall of Georgia, the largest mall in the state, has a Buford address and keeps the shopping side of December busy.

Buford people clearly like their lights. Permanent lighting lets your own roofline join in from Halloween right through New Year, then settle into a quiet warm white for the rest of the year. Summer has its own outdoor spots, from the aquatic center at Bogan Park to the swimming areas at Buford Dam Park, and the porch can stay lit for those long evenings too.

Halloween makes a natural second season. See Halloween lighting for orange and purple ideas, and Autopilot for a single calendar that switches between holidays for you.

Four Things Worth Comparing

Permanent lighting is a long-term addition to your house. Whoever you hire, these are the questions that separate one system from another.

  1. Step 1: What it looks like at noon

Ask to see the track in daylight. A color-matched, low-profile channel under the fascia should be hard to pick out from the street.

  2. Step 2: Whether each light is separate

Individually addressable lights can hold patterns, stripes and accents. Lights wired in fixed groups cannot. Patterns & Animations shows what that makes possible.

  3. Step 3: What white really looks like

Many color LEDs mix red, green and blue to fake white, which can look blue or pink on brick. A dedicated warm-white diode avoids that.

  4. Step 4: Who backs the hardware

Look for a written manufacturer warranty that you register in your own name. Gemstone’s terms are published in full on our warranty page.
