The hill where the sugar spilled

A Small City With a Sweet Name

Local tradition says Sugar Hill got its name when a shipment of sugar spilled on the hill, and the name stuck long before the town was chartered in 1939. It became the City of Sugar Hill in 1975, and today it sits in the northern corner of Gwinnett County within easy reach of Lake Lanier.

City Hall opened downtown in 2013, and right behind it The Bowl at Sugar Hill gives residents a terraced lawn and stage for summer concerts, and E. E. Robinson Park covers the ball fields and open space for the rest of the week. North of town the land starts to rise toward the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, with Lake Lanier just beyond the city.

For homeowners here, the question we hear most is simple: can the house look good in December without a weekend on the roof? It can. Our residential track system explains how the lights stay hidden by day, and the gallery shows what they can do once the sun goes down.

Color with a lighter touch

More Than Red and Green

With a name like Sugar Hill, it is no surprise that softer palettes go over well here. Pale pink and white for Valentine’s week, pastel colors at Easter, a peppermint stripe in December: every light on the track can take its own color, so a palette that would be impossible with ordinary strings takes a minute to set.

When the season is over, the dedicated warm-white diode in each light gives you a calm outline for everyday evenings. Brightness goes from a faint glow up to full output, which matters on a quiet street where a blazing roofline would feel out of place.

See the Valentine’s Day lighting page for more soft-color ideas, or the Warm White & RGBW page to learn why the warm white looks natural on stone and brick.

  • Soft pastels, peppermint stripes or one accent color per peak
  • Dim from full output to a faint glow for a quiet street
